The Bible is full of stories of women who have been an encouragement to men throughout history. The women in the Bible were not without flaws but they had great strengths as well. Scripture shows examples of great women who any young woman might aspire toward, as well as examples of what a young woman should try to avoid. By studying the characteristics of various women in the Bible, a woman can understand how great her place is in God’s plan. Let’s look at a few of those characteristics.
Courage is one of the characteristics common to many women in the Bible. Esther showed courage when she called upon the king unannounced and risked her life to tell the king of her people’s plights. When the king had Haman killed, her people were safe. Courage also was shown in the judge Deborah, who led the people of Israel against the Canaanites; and with the help of another woman, Jael, Israel triumphed. Women showing courage is an encouragement for guys to stand up for what is right and true by being courageous as well!
Faith is another one of the common characteristics of the women in the Bible. Faith is shown in several women, including Mary and Ruth. In the case of Ruth, her faith in the words of Naomi led her to live a happy life and become one of the women who became an ancestor to Jesus. Ruth faithfully followed the advice of Naomi to end up with a husband and child. Mary is the woman who shows a tremendous amount of faith in God. Her faith led to the birth of Jesus and her continued faith protected her. She believed God, and when she conceived Jesus, she was confident that God would ensure their safety. In relationships the woman’s faith will always encourage the man’s faith to be even stronger. On many occasions the woman’s faith is the source that leads the man to finding faith in God. In 1 Corinthians 7 Paul even talks about the possibility of a believing wife leading her husband to find salvation.
The women of the Bible were also considered “virtuous” when they walked with God. A virtuous woman is the perfect helpmate of her husband. According to the website Devotional Reflections from the Bible, a virtuous woman is one her husband can trust, who does not compete with her husband, who helps her husband, who is not lazy or idle, who has kindness in her heart and wisdom in her words. The virtuous woman is the example of what a woman of the Bible should strive toward. I’m reminded of the words of Proverbs 31:10-11, “An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. rare, precious. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”
It’s important to strive to possess these characteristics while you are young, during the years that you are dating. If you can work on these areas in your life and grow in these different qualities, one day you will be a great encourager. My wife and I have been married for five years now and I know without a doubt that her encouragement has helped me in every aspect of my life.
An encouraging woman’s worth is indeed far above any earthly wealth. May you be an encouragement to the young men around you.
