Winter Reading List

pic497__8nrwcs“Set your mind on things above, NOT on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). This is a serious passage and deserves to be taken as such in EVERY aspect of our lives – our work, our play, our friends, and even our entertainment. One of my favorite things to do in the whole wide world is to curl up with a hot chocolate on a cold, winter day and read a good book! It is relaxing, fun and a great past time to have. But, there are ungodly books out there and we have to beware of them. Just by walking through a library or book store you can usually tell which section you should avoid. We need to be careful about what we are letting our minds be filled with. Is it pure? Is it moral? Would God be pleased with it? We need to always keep the thoughts of Philippians 4:8 in our mind; “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
The good news is there are hundreds of amazing books out there. There are very enjoyable and clean books; new and old. I love reading the “newbies” (“Hunger Games” and “Twilight”,etc) but I think a lot of people forget about the older ones and miss out on wonderful literature! Here are some of my favorite classics that are clean, pure and fun to read:

  • Pride and Prejudice
    Jane Austen
I used to read this at least once a year, it is that good. It is a wonderful, funny, romantic and dramatic story. Seeing the movie is NOT enough! You must read this one!
  • Little Women
    Louisa May Alcott
There was a movie made about this with Christian Bale a while back. It was pretty good, but again, you would be missing out if you did not read it for yourself. It is a great book about sisters who help each other with their love lives, getting through a war and growing closer together through the hard times.
  • The Scarlett Pimpernel
    Baroness Orczy
This is more of an action and adventure story that follows a love story as well. My dad, who would never read a book through, loved this one. This has got it all: drama, romance, thrill and humor.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia
    C.S Lewis
People who claim these stories are only for kids are dead wrong! I read them all as a child (several times), but I have known many adults who enjoy them just as much. It is a wonderful fantasy book with lots of great messages.
  • Anne of Green Gables
    L.M. Montgomery
This is a great series to get into during a break. These books follow one girl from the time she is a young teenager. You will get emotionally attached to these books and not want them to stop!

These are just a few options of books for you, but do not stop here! There are many, many good books out there that are clean, moral and very fun to read. But like every other area in our life, we MUST make sure we fill our minds with things God would approve of.  Always remember Titus 1:15“To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.” Now grab your cocoa, wrap up in a soft blanket, and get reading!
